Vermiculite Insulation Removal

Vermiculite Insulation Abatement

Vermiculite insulation by itself is not a designated substance regulated by the provincial government, however, much of the old vermiculite installed in Windsor is contaminated with asbestos.
Vermiculite that was mined from the Libby mine in Montana is heavily contaminated with asbestos because the two materials are interlaced with each other under the earth. This vermiculite was packaged as Zonolite insulation and installed in Windsor-Essex homes until it was discontinued in 1984. In practice, the asbestos contaminants are in the dust surrounding the vermiculite. This dust stays airborne in the insulated spaces due to air flow, and is easily disturbed and spread throughout the rest of the property.

Vermiculite removal requires extensive dust containment procedures including triple decontamination facilities, HEPA filtered negative air isolation, and HEPA-rated vacuums and power tools. HAZMAT tyvek suits, boots and gloves in addition to a full-face powered respirator with p100 filters are required to handle hazardous material. Always consult a professional for removal of asbestos vermiculite.
